Indivisible Oak Cliff hosts Rep. Rafael Anchia Jun

Categories: Politics, # Other Forum Location: Dallas Supporting Causes: Immigration Reform Keywords: activism, speech, sanctuary

Representative Rafael Anchia will be the guest speaker at the June 26 meeting of Indivisible Oak Cliff at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Oak Cliff, 3839 W. Kiest Blvd, Dallas, at 6:30. Guests are welcome.

Anchia, who is serving his sixth term in the Texas House, spoke passionately against one of the toughest anti-sanctuary city bills in the country. Texas Senate Bill 4, signed into law by Governor Abbot on May 7, 2017, imposes steep fines and jail time on Texas officials who fail to follow federal immigration laws.

Most major law enforcement agencies, including police chiefs in Dallas, Houston, Austin, Arlington, Ft. Worth, and San Antonio describe the bill as "divisive," limiting local law enforcement agencies to police and protect their cities as they see fit. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins also decried the bill as making Dallasites less safe.

Not only has Representative Anchia been an avid defender of civil rights throughout the 2017 legislative session, he is also a supporter of “New Urbanism” - a movement promoting environmentally friendly habits by creating walkable neighborhoods containing a wide range of housing and job types.

Indivisible Oak Cliff is an active, progressive, non-partisan movement initiated in 2016. Members of the Oak Cliff chapter were part of the March for Science, they participate with other organizations, and they routinely contact their elected representatives on a variety of issues. The group has members from Oak Cliff and nearby suburbs. Find out more about this organization at the meeting, at the website or at
